Think of porcupines and one usually thinks of the mountains and pine trees. But they do live on the prairie and occasionally at the river. One lady I met who lives in the country says they come on to her porch at night looking for dog food. They are a rodent, as are beavers, and can live into their twenties.
Only twice have I encountered a porcupine on the ground. Usually they are in trees and not only easy to spot but difficult to ignore. Very docile, not aggressive at all.
