Burrowing Owl skull. (From roadkill.)
Unlike mammals, birds have a skeletal structure in front of the eyes. This provides extra muscles which permit it to focus better than we can. Hence, Eagle-Eyed. The two pictures below are of Red-Tailed Hawks. The second skeleton does not have the eye-bone structure preserved.
