Not only does the Spiny Soft-Shelled Turtle look ancient, it is thought to look like it did forty million years ago. The females can be large, fifteen inches or more, and live up to fifty years. There are many of these in the South Platte.
Look carefully at the leading edge of the shell. Those little protrusions are why it is called “spiny.”
