This fellow shows that water plants can live on the prairie.  The Arrowhead was found on the Pawnee Grasslands in a swale which receives only ephemeral water.  If interested, they can be pulled  out by the roots, taken home and planted in a backyard pond.  They thrive, winter over, and bloom the nest summer.  The bottom picture was taken north of North Sterling Reservoir.
