Though listed as a threatened species in Iowa, it is doing well here, fine in some places. One source says it can live thirty years. It is sometimes called Cowboy’s Delight as it can bloom in the driest conditions and would pop out unexpectedly to delight the cowboys.
It forms colonies, spreading by rhizomes.
